April Showers Bring May Flowers...
April 27, 2012
Can you believe it's the end of the year already? As the last full week draws to a close, Tappanites are pulling posters down from their walls, frantically scrambling for quarters for that one last load of laundry (where did all that MUlaa go anyway?), and studying for their final exams. The last month of school has been full of sunshine and fun events, from another talent show to the Feed My Starving Children MobilePack Event (Tappan helped Miami University pack 108,000 meals for hungry children around the world!) to one last Tappan social to the Met Quad Carnival.
What are some of your favorite memories from this year?

March Madness!
April 2, 2012
With the incredible weather we’ve had, March quickly came and went, bringing us one step closer to summer! Between planning for Kira and Liz’s surprise going away party and putting on Breakfast in Bed, Community Council was hard at work trying to churn out spectacular events before the end of the semester.
This month featured the Surprise Going Away party, fit for the ever-wonderful Kira and Liz, and later that same week, Service Committee hosted Spring Cookie Decorating in the lobby! Also featured in March was the Euchre Tournament and Breakfast in Bed! Breakfast in Bed was quite the success, and from the pictures below, it seemed like Council enjoyed making the pancakes almost as much as the recipients enjoyed eating them. As the craziness of the month seemed to wind down, RedHawk Hunt happened! Between the lack of sleep and the frustration of deciphering ambiguous clues, Council’s team looked a little… tired by Sunday.
Keep a look out for upcoming events! Feed My Starving Children, Relay for Life, Talent Show (put on by Resident Spotlight Committee) and the Carnival will be events you won’t want to miss! Thanks for Tappan in!

February Friendship
February 26, 2012
February: the month of love! The thought of this short and sweet month fills us with candy hearts, teddy bears, and pink-frosted cupcakes. For Tappan Hall, February also meant the Friend Finder program hosted by Community Council's Social Committee. The committee set up a sheet behind which three anonymous contestants hid while the program's host, Beau, asked questions. The person in the "hot seat" looking for a friend would tell Beau his or her favorite answer and whoever had the best answers won a new friend! Prizes included candy, roses, and Valentine's-themed stuffed animals. This month also saw the sale of Love Bugs, cute little critters made by the Craft/Holiday Committee. These adorable puffballs were enormously popular and earned proceeds for charity. The Cultural Committee's Miami History & Culture Jeopardy Game was also a success, pitting two teams against each other to test their knowledge about the history of our great university. Who knew that the Miami Indians called themselves "Twighwee," meaning "the cry of a crane?"
As spring break approaches, Community Council's events have wound down, deferring to long nights spent studying and that last push before a much-needed reprieve. But Tappan, get ready for spring: the MET Quad Carnival, rock climbing, Breakfast in Bed, Relay for Life, Feed My Starving Children, and more are all coming up. Thanks for Tappan in!

Kickin' Off the Semester Right
January 26, 2011
Jealous of the mustaches? You should be! Over RHA Training weekend, Tappan's Community Council emerged victorious as "Best Dressed" of the councils in attendance for mustachioed nerd chic. The best part of this triumph is the prize: a breakfast spread for Tappan Hall. Look in the next few months for information on the fundraiser for which we'll be using the breakfast: Breakfast in Bed, a great event put on by the Community Service committee which will earn money for Relay for Life fundraising!
What else is happening in the next few months? As Tappanites transition back into the routine of classes, there will be many upcoming programs to jazz up the spring semester. One such program is a "Friend Finder" Valentine's Day event at the beginning of February, another is a Miami History and Culture Jeopardy game mid-February, and yet another is a rock climbing event at the rec. In addition, Tappan will be involved in Relay for Life and Feed My Starving Children, two incredibly poignant events that raise money for cancer research and pack meals for hungry children worldwide, respectively. Be on the lookout for information about the Met Quad Carnival as well, which will be coming up as the weather shakes off its cold, wintry coat and lets the sun shine through the clouds.
What are you most looking forward to this semester? Charter Day Ball on February 18th (don't forget to get your ticket--they are going fast!)? Relay for Life on April 13th and 14th? Hockey games? Whatever it is, remember to study hard and make Tappan Hall proud! Thanks for Tappan In!

Programs With Pizazz
November 20, 2011
As finals creep up like the November frost upon the windowpanes, Tappan residents managed to fit in one more month of fun and relaxation. Indian Cultural Night attracted a number of residents, many of whom had not had a chance to try authentic Indian food. Fortunately, Krishna came to the rescue, and residents sampled nan and tikka masala of varying levels of spiciness with gusto. Along with an Indian documentary, residents got more than just a taste of Indian food--they got a true taste of another culture.
While some Tappan residents got their fix with Indian food, others took to Oxford Lanes to let off some steam at the local bowling alley. Many of you may not know this, but there are some incredibly talented bowlers in our midst! Although there were many strikes, the number of gutter balls far exceeded the number of strikes and spares. Whether you played one game or three, got a 30 or a 300, going bowling was a great precursor to the relaxation we were all about to experience over Thanksgiving break.
We hope you all manage to stay warm and dry while furiously studying for finals these next couple of weeks, and thanks for Tappan In!

Fall Festivities
October 28, 2011
So, what's been happening since you last checked in? A lot, actually! Tappan Hall has been busy. Here are some of the spectacular events that brought Tappan residents together this October:
After a couple weeks of Oxford's weather going back and forth between a monsoon and a heat wave, we seem to have finally settled in with chilly, late fall weather. Along with the promises of Thanksgiving break, homecoming is on everyone’s minds! Campus Activities Council created a full week of events to get everyone pumped about Homecoming. From tie-dying t-shirts in MET quad to the Door decorating contest, Tappan has been involved in the festivities. We hope you got involved in all the activities this week! Show your Redhawk pride this weekend! Don’t forget to support our football team at the Homecoming game against the Buffalo Bills October 29!
Tappan Hall also put on a talent show, which drew upon all kinds of hidden talent, from piano playing to singing to beat boxing. The crowd alternately laughed and loudly applauded. Sandwiches, fruit, and punch was served and the entertainment was well worth it! Check out the video above for a taste of the talent displayed at the show. The day after, Tappan residents went to Butterfield Farms for an autumn outing. The sunset over the cornfields created a dazzling backdrop for the hay ride, which took residents over to feed Mr. Butterfield's herd of cows. Students offered ears of corn to the eager cattle, whose long, rope-like tongues snaked out so that they could devour the tasty meal. Afterward, Tappanites attempted to make it through the corn maze, which was designed by engineering students. A few made it out--but others wandered their way back to...the entrance. A bonfire, complete with hot dogs, apple cider, Butterfield Farms' delicious pumpkin cookies, and s'mores, concluded the perfect fall night.
This weekend is Halloweekend! Get ready for Safe Trick-or-Treat on Sunday (Are your costumes prepared?), and thanks for Tappan in!

Tappan Hall Mixer

Black lights? Check. Headbands? Check. Music (courtesy of DJ Andrew Tillstrom)? Check. Dancing? Check. And of course...food?! Check. There's only one thing this could be: a Tappan Hall party! This past Friday night (September 30th), the Tappan basement throbbed with the bass beat of many popular songs as residents gathered to decorate their own white headbands (which glowed spectacularly under the black lights), dance, and hang out. Community Council's Social Committee made sure that the basement was adorned with balloons, lights, and a white sheet on which residents could write. Despite hot, burning black lights, residents managed to let off some steam after a long week. Party-goers got a little creative with the theme--outfits ranged from Neal Swartz and Allison Gnaegy's matching plaid to Matt Meeks's neon yellow vest with reflectors to Sarah Chapman's tutu. No matter what dances were performed, from Ethan Vargo's Stanky Leg to ballroom and swing dances, one thing was for sure: everyone had a blast! Thanks to all who came out and helped make our first Tappan Hall program a success!
As we herald the beginning of fall with changing leaves and upcoming Halloween activities, get ready for October's events, which include a trip to Butterfield Farms and a Homecoming door-decorating contest.
There are a bunch of events coming up this month, so keep checking your emails and the calendar posted above. Thanks for Tappan in!

Community Council
September 25, 2011
As late August hit, the Miami University campus was flooded with new and returning students. The picturesque, red bricked community vibrated with brand-new ideas and organizations like the melodic strings of a guitar. All across the college, friendships were forming, events were happening, and goals were being set—and here at Tappan Hall, all three of these things were encompassed in Tappan’s burgeoning Community Council.
Inspired by Kira’s enthusiasm for the Hall Cup, the prospect of fierce competition with Emerson (Never fear, we’ll bring them down!), and ambitious ideas to improve our new home, there were over fifty applicants to Community Council. Some brave souls also ran for leadership positions: president, RHA senator, RHA General Assembly representative, eco representative, blog representative, secretary, and treasurer. As applicants made their rounds through the residence hall gathering signatures for their required petitions, they got a taste of campaigning and met other Tappanites aspiring to be on Community Council as well. During the official campaigning period, bathroom walls, bulletin boards, Facebook, and doors alike all proudly displayed the posters and slogans of those running for positions. Some clever politicking included Graham Bowling’s free graham crackers, a popular gimmick, and Jessica Walpole’s use of a catchy name recognition technique: “Jessica Walpole (Sounds like waffle)!” Hopeful presidential candidate Kim Parent attached an origami box to her campaign poster surrounded by some of her ideas, encouraging Tappanites to vote for her because she “thinks outside the box.”
After much colorful campaigning, the day of elections finally arrived. Following impromptu speeches by each candidate, the voting took place for Tappan’s Community Council. The results were Matt Meeks and Kim Parent as co-presidents, Allison Gnaegy as eco rep, Surayya Hasan as secretary, Libby Mueller and Heather Perkins as co-blog representatives, and Sarah Chapman as treasurer. Online voting the next day decided the RHA senator and representative: Graham Bowling and Sara Jolley, respectively. Matt Meeks said that his biggest goals as co-president of Community Council are to get everyone in Tappan “involved in at least one activity” and to get to know the residents.
With its leaders in place, Community Council set to work. They brainstormed ideas that spanned from dances and socials to community service projects. At the retreat on Saturday, September 10th, the council divided into committees like the Cultural Committee and Holiday Committee (Think gingerbread houses and snowball fights!) and bonded over group activities. Following the retreat, the Tappan Hall Community Council went to RHA training on September 17th. Benton Hall reverberated with the chants of Tappan's enthusiastic council members, who were dressed all in black for an intimidating "black out!"
The future looks bright for the 2011-2012 year in Tappan. Through the tedium of homework and studying, Tappanites have their first event to look forward to: a highlighter dance party! Get ready for a night of neon festivities, and thanks for Tappan in!
